Why do queer communities–including LGBTQ+ youth–experience AI differently than other marginalised groups? What happens when systems are trained on data that may not fully reflect diverse identities and lived experiences? How does AI influence the way LGBTQ+ people access information, support, healthcare, employment, and community?

These are some of the questions we’ll explore with two experts working at the intersection of technology, rights, and governance: Beckett LeClair, researcher and Head of Technology at 5Rights, and Dr Ley Muller, Deputy Chair of Queer World and CEO of Values-driven AI.

While this conversation is rooted in LGBTQ+ experiences, the themes extend far beyond any single community. Examining AI through a queer lens can help us better understand broader questions of representation, participation, digital justice, and responsible innovation. It can reveal who benefits from emerging technologies, who may be unintentionally excluded, and what organisations can do to ensure AI serves the people they exist to support.

This discussion is particularly relevant for nonprofit organisations. As NGOs increasingly adopt AI tools for communications, fundraising, service delivery, and advocacy, they face difficult questions about ethics, governance, and community impact. How should organisations balance innovation with responsibility? Who should be involved in AI-related decisions? And how can NGOs identify potential harms before they affect the communities they work with?

Join us for a conversation exploring the opportunities and challenges AI presents for LGBTQ+ communities and what these experiences can teach us about building more inclusive and equitable technologies for everyone.

Some of the questions we hope to discuss include:

  • Why LGBTQ+ communities may experience AI systems differently from other groups;
  • How AI can support access to information, connection, and community, particularly for LGBTQ+ youth;
  • The role of representation in data, design, and decision-making;
  • Privacy, safety, and the risks associated with sensitive personal data;
  • What digital justice means in the age of AI;
  • How NGOs can identify and respond to disparate impacts of AI on the communities they serve;
  • What responsible and values-driven AI governance looks like in practice.
